2011 Spring Thaw- Team Pistis with 12 podium finishes

Pistis mountain bike racing team raced in the Spring Thaw Cross Country Mountain Bike Race on Sat the 14th. We sent 23 riders and 12 of them (52%) got on the podium earning a medal

Pistis was in first place going into the race and these results have extended their lead in the series. We should score 146 points for this race, the most of any team this year for a single race. The second and third place teams were poorly represented and may not have even scored.

2010 Bear Springs Short Track and XC Report

Hey all,

Here is what went down at BST. Nick Hannan and I drove up Friday afternoon, and arrived at the venue at 9:00pm to set up camp. Overnight lows were in the 20s with icy snow throughout the night.

The next morning, we registered and rode the first 4 mile section of the race. No snow was on course. We did a little hiking and checked out the rest of the cat 3 course and junctions.

The Short Track began at 3:00pm. I took 3rd with 7 laps in 25 min and Nick won his category with 6 laps.

It was a beautiful day for the XC race. There were blue skys and temps hit the 50s. The start was scary as the whole cat 2 field started together with over a 160 riders. There were a lot of crashes on the road with a mixed field of that many riders. I finished 33rd in a time of 1:55. Nick met me at the finish line after winning his category and finishing in the top 10 overall for cat 3. Nick did awesome and people are taking notice, since it was his first mountain bike ever.

2010 Lemurian Classic Race Report

I wanted to let you all know how the race down in California went this past weekend for me (along with Roger and Tom). Overall it was a well-run and well-attended race with a healthy turnout of some very strong California riders.

Natalie and I drove down to the race venue at Whiskeytown Lake (10 miles west of Redding) on Friday after work and camped at a group campground near the race start. It was National Park week so there was no entry fee into the Whiskeytown Recreation Area or for camping (although we did pay the camping fee to the race promoter when I registered).

The race started as a mass start (all three race distances and all categories together) at a marina down by the lake. About a 1/2 mile into the race the first of two large climbs started. Up and down on gravel/dirt roads before riding some pavement across the reservoir’s dam to some old flume/mining trails. This middle portion of the race was fairly flat, but the terrain consisted of tight corners and technical maneuvering over exposed rocks. Both Roger and I sliced tires (along with quite a few other racers) in this section – sharp exposed rocks and fast speeds = sliced sidewalls!

I was able to get a tube into my tire and continue on (thanks Rog for the mid-race pitcrew and chat!) while Roger had to throw in the towel and hitch a ride back to the marina. I ended up near the back of the pack and spent the rest of the race trying to catch Tom. 2/3 the way thru the race a monster climb reared its head with some very steep pitches (hike-a-bike & leg cramps were commonplace for most racers). The descent that followed back down to the finish at the marina was very demanding and very technical for a MTB race. Along the way I lost count of how many streams we had to ride or hike-a-bike across. Truly an epic race packed into only 26 miles for the long course.

After the race I soaked my fully thrashed leg muscles in the lake for a long time before hobbling back up to the awards area for a very good burrito and a raffle prize with Natalie. Don’t tell Bear, but we stopped at IN-N-OUT Burger on the way back thru Redding

I would recommend this race to anyone looking to have their bike skills put thru their paces – physical endurance, bike handling, mid-race bike/tire repairs, race nutrition, etc. It demanded everything and I gave it everything I had! I never did pass up Tom again, but did catch a glimpse of him towards the end of the race before the final ripping descent down to the marina.

If you are wanting to hit this race up in the future, definitely get comfortable on picking good lines thru tricky, rocky terrain as well as steep ascending and gnarly, steep descending. Brace yourself for mud, water, agony and smiles.

That is my story and I’m sticking to it.
